Secretary's Report: Motion to accept the minutes of the June 14, 2005 meeting was made by Rick Rissmiller and seconded by Sue Brooks. Passed unanimously.

Treasurer's Report: An oral report was given.

Building concerns:

  1. Early Childhood suggested the possibility of a 'central emergency phone number' for the entire district. It was also noted that the Armory doors are opening at 7:35 instead of 7:45. Why?
  2. Green St. had concerns about half-days & Collaboration meetings. Are they really necessary?
  3. Shimer expressed concerns about the first week of school and the 'Parent Walk-Through'.
  4. The high school noted the 'new paperwork' requirement of the calendars. It was suggested that Barb talk to Gordon & George Chando about this new requirement in light of the district's commitment to reducing paperwork. The possibility of filing a grievance over this issue as it changes the 'terms & conditions of employment' was noted.
  5. Rumors about the state test scores have been circulating throughout the district. Barb said she would inquire when the results will be released publicly.

Committee Reports:

  1. Public Relations:
    1. Barb asked for volunteers to assist Kelly Franco on this committee.
  2. Scholarship:
    1. Joan Ricker reported that the committee will meet in the near future. Plans are underway for two fundraising events: one in the fall and the other in the spring. More details will be forthcoming.
  3. Health & Safety:
    1. Barb reported that Marilyn Shober attended a 'Health & Safety' workshop this summer at NJEA Leadership Training. Barb asked anyone interested in working on this committee to contact her.
  4. Membership:
    1. Chuck Nowalk reported that over 30 new members had joined at this time.
  5. Grievance:
    1. Barb noted that the next Grievance committee meeting is scheduled for Monday, Sep. 26, at 4:30 p.m. at the middle school in room A106.
  6. WCEA:
    1. Barb reported that the first WCEA meeting is Wed., Sep. 21, at Asbury Willows from 4:30-6.
    2. The next meeting will be Wed., Nov. 16, at Asbury Willows from 4:30-6.
  7. Negotiations:
    1. Barb announced the following members will comprise the negotiation's committee for the next teachers' contract: Barbara Alderfer (Pres. & chair); Deb Carty (grades 1 & 2); Nadine Anderson (Spec. Srvc.); Bob Jiorle & Jeff Quinn (PHS); Jason Kupcha & Rick Rissmiller (PMS); Sharon Jiorle (K); & Melissa Lilly (nurse & grades 3-5).
    2. The first meeting for the negotiation's committee will be Thurs., Sep. 29, in room A106 at the middle school. The committee will meet with Pam Niles, our UNISERV rep.
    3. Barb also announced the formation of a subcommittee to look at the co-curricular stipends. The members of this subcommittee are Bill Hurst (PHS), Rich Gunkle (PMS) & Sue Redcay (Elem.). Contact any of these members by Monday, Sep. 19, if you have any concerns/suggestions about the co-curricular stipend guide.
  8. Social:
    1. Deb Carty reported that the 'Welcome Back' picnic at Flynn's was a huge success.
    2. Deb passed out membership survey forms to building reps in an attempt to create a database of our members talents & interests.
    3. Deb introduced the idea of 'Jr AR' (junior Association reps) who could attend Executive committee meetings but not vote.
    4. Deb mentioned another program (SOS) that she would like to introduce to assist our new members become better acclimated to the Phillipsburg family.

Old Business:

  1. PEA t-shirts for our newer members was discussed. Building reps are asked to let Joan Ricker know how many t-shirts and the sizes ASAP.
  2. Barb passed out a 'maternity' handout for building reps to read and familiarize themselves with. When in doubt, contact Maureen Broenhle at the board office.
  3. The middle & elementary schools will coordinate the clubs currently listed on the co-curricular stipend page.

New Business:

  1. A new 'cell phone' policy is in effect this year. You may NOT use your cell phone during class time or duty time. You may use it before & after school and during your prep period. You may also use it in case of an emergency. Deb Carty advised everyone to be very careful that you are not the first one caught violating this new policy as we do not know what the consequences of violating it will be. (So assume the worst!)
  2. Gas mileage reimbursement is now 48.5 cents/mile.
  3. BATS (Board Attendance TeamS) members are being recruited to attend board meetings throughout the year. Contact Barb or Deb if you are interested.
  4. The new paperwork requirement of a 'calendar' was mentioned again.
  5. FAST (parent involvement) training will be held in Trenton on Tues., Oct. 20, from 5:30-8:30. Contact Barb if you are interested.
  6. WCEA 'Dealing with Difficult Chlidren' workshop will be held on Wed., Sep. 28, at Harker's Hollow. Contact Barbara Alderfer if you are interested in attending.
