Special Guests: Matt Schenk (PMS Jr. AR), Gordon Pethick (Superintendent) & Jackie Attinello (Assistant Superintendent).

Secretary's Report: Motion to accept the minutes of the Nov. 8, 2005 meeting was made (Karen/Bonnie). Passed unanimously.

Visitors: Gordon Pethick and Jackie Attinello stopped by to discuss options for January 2, 2006, a legal holiday. Gordon stated that he knows Jan. 2 is a legal holiday but that the calendar is already set and he prefers for the kids to be in school that day for educational purposes rather than a day in June, which would be the make-up day for Jan. 2. It is recommended that anyone interested in having/planning on taking Jan. 2 off contact Barb Alderfer by e-mail by this Friday. Barb will relay to Gordon the number of people interested/planning on taking off Jan. 2. If Gordon determines that enough people would be absent on Jan. 2 to hamper the opening and/or operation of the schools, he will present a motion to the board of education on Monday evening canceling school on Jan. 2. Teachers would have to make up this day on MONDAY, JUNE 19.

Treasurer's Report: Nadine presented the monthly treasurer's report. Motion to accept the treasurer's report for Nov. 2005 was made (Rick/Matty). Passed unanimously.

Committee Reports:

  1. WCEA:
    1. Bonnie Vasvari reported on the last WCEA rep. meeting held at Asbury Willows.
  2. Public Relations:
    1. Arky DeStefano has agreed to be the high school rep on the board's high school SOS PR committee.
  3. Scholarship:
    1. Next meeting will be Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the new Early Childhood building at 3:30.
  4. Ed Council:
    1. The high school has presented concerns about the new procedure for reporting abuses to both DYFS and the police. Barb will present these concerns tomorrow evening at Ed Council.
  5. Health & Safety:
    1. Barb is still looking for volunteers for this committee.
  6. Social:
    1. Deb Carty announced a 'Stress Management' Workshop would be held at Flynn's on Jan. 25, 2006.
    2. No SOS meetings in December or January.
    3. Deb requested more bodies on the Social committee to help make it more active.
  7. Grievance:
    1. One grievance at level 3.
  8. Negotiations:
    1. The teachers had their first meeting with the board on Nov. 29. The next meetings are scheduled for Jan. 17, Feb. 16 & March 16. Barb will be asking questions at her 10 minutes meetings for input from our members.

Building concerns:

  1. Freeman: There are now seven male faculty members. A bathroom would be nice. Problems sending/receiving e-mails to the district's mail server for people whose ISP's include AOL, FastNet, & EPIX. If anyone else is experiencing problems with the district's e-mail service, please forward your problems to Chuck Nowalk. Paras are spending a lot of time making photocopies. The photocopiers are not working properly.
  2. PMS: Queries about the Jan. 2 issue (see above) and date for this year's Retirement Dinner. (Not set yet.)
  3. Early Childhood: No CO (Certificate of Occupancy) yet to move into the new Early Childhood Center. Problems moving into the new building. Problems with subs and calling in to be off. A reminder of the proper procedures to use if you are taking off because of an 'Emergency' day. 1) Do NOT use the 'Family Leave' item on the leave form. Use the 'Other' item and write down 'Emergency Day'. There is no need to provide an explanation. 2) Do NOT call in ahead of time. An 'emergency' cannot be planned! Finally, there are some problems with the phone chain. Questions about the high school's VoiceShot system were entertained and answered.
  4. PHS: Sick Bank (see below.)

Old Business:

  1. Sick Bank: Chuck Nowalk appealed to our members to consider donating a personal day to the Sick Bank. While acknowledging there are many flaws with the current setup (ex. only teachers benefit from using the Sick Bank; you must give up a personal day to the bank, etc.), it was pointed out that this is the first time in Association history that we have a Sick Bank. It is now a negotiable item. The Association's position is that it will only get better as we negotiate to have the Sick Bank benefits apply equally to all groups within the Association. See your building rep for a 'Donation' form. Fill it out and return to your building rep ASAP.
  2. NORWESCAP Food Drive: Results should be known later this week.

New Business:

  1. Spelling Bee: Ann Ball requested that the Association support the annual Spelling Bee both financially and with volunteers. All members are asked to consider volunteering their time & talents to this worthwhile event. Contact Ann Ball if you are willing to assist. Motion to provide Ann Ball up to $500 for expenses incurred with the Spelling Bee was made (Chuck/Karen). Passed Unanimously.
