Committee
Reports:
- BATS:
- Barb and Joanne Pizzino reported on the last board
meeting.
- WCEA:
- No report.
- Public Relations:
- No report.
- Scholarship:
- Chuck reported that three (3) scholarships in the amounts
of $1,000 apiece were given to Nicle Fye, Kristin Jiorle and Tiffany
Maynard at the high school's annual 'Awards Night' ceremony held
on June 7. There still remains $1,000 left in the scholarship
fund that will carry over to next year.
- Ed Council:
- Next meeting is October 11 at Flynn's. If your building
does not have a rep to attend, please consider volunteering to
attend.
- Health & Safety:
- Marilyn reported that she will be working over the
summer to organize this committee.
- Social:
- There was discussion about the 'Retirement Dinner'
held on May 25. Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening though there
were many negative comments about the food. Two thank you notes
(Mary Ann Bisco & Karen Bodine) were received and read.
- Back to School Picnic/Luau/Pig Roast/General Meeting will be
held on Wednesday, August 30 at Flynn's from 3-7. Look for reps
from AIG & Prudential Insurance companies & the Buyers'
Edge to be present along with many more NJEA benefits displays.
- Pride:
- No report.
- Negotiations:
- Teachers negotiations' team will meet on June 21 with
new members of the board's negotiation team. Check your e-mails
from home to keep abreast of the latest developments.(Contact
Chuck via e-mail if you are not certain how to check your school
e-mail from your home Internet connection.)
Building
concerns:
- Green Street: Workmen Comp issues were discussed.
- Early Childhood: Concerns about the procedure/technique the
district uses for obtaining a sub for individuals. An incident where
fertilizer was sprayed on staff members' cars and placement on the
paras' guide were also discussed.
- PHS: Several veteran teachers have been placed on 'Pathway
1' which means they will be doing portfolios and have to be observed
three (3) times next year. Teachers should be certain to accomplish
all their paperwork (ex. cover pages, unit & lesson plans, etc.)
to their supervisors/principals' satisfaction. Failure to do so may
result in unsatisfactory evaluations which will result in placement
on 'Pathway 1'.
Old Business:
- NEA Convention: Mike Kruczek is the only PEA member attending.
$100 will be provided to help defray expenses.
- Obtaining Subs: More discussion on the procedure/technique
of obtaining subs.
New Business:
- Rallies: Barb & Chuck attended a rally in Trenton for
the Abbott schools on Thursday, June 8. NJEA is organizing a rally
in support of our pensions & benefits on Monday, June 19. 31 members
from the PSD will attend.
- Dues Increase: A motion to increase the
local dues for teachers by $10/year and make the local dues for the
custodians, paraprofessionals, secretaries & security guards $6/year
was made by Chuck and seconded by Deb. Discussion ensued. The teachers'
increase amounts to fifty cents/paycheck. The other rate is either
a $1 or $2 yearly increase that will make the dues consistent for
all these groups. No one can remember the last time local dues were
increased. In addition to the teachers' negotiations currently happening,
two other groups will open their negotiations next year. Passed unanimously.
- 2006-07 Budget: A motion to accept the 2006-07
budget as presented by the treasurer was made by Rick and seconded
by Chuck. Discussion ensued. Passed unanimously.
- District Dress Code: Superintendent Pethick has asked the
PEA to provide three individuals to meet with three administrators
to look at a district-wide dress code policy. If you are interested
in serving on this committee, please contact Barb ASAP.
- Resolution: A resolution recognizing the contributions of
about-to-be retiree and past PEA president John Pokrivchak was made.
Motion was made by Chuck and seconded by Rick. Passed
unanimously. Click
here to see a copy of the resolution.
Motion to adjourn was made at approximately 5:15 p.m. (Chuck/Nadine).
Passed unanimously.
An ice-cream cake was provided (and enjoyed) in recognition of retiring
PEA rep Karen Bodine's many years of service.
Next meeting is September 12, 2006 in the
home ec room of the middle school.
Respectfully submitted,
Chuck Nowalk, Secretary
