Communications: Thank You notes were received and read from Darlene Eger, Jared Helms & John Pokrivchak.

Treasurer's Report: Nadine presented the treasurer's report for the month of September. Motion to accept the treasurer's report made by Chuck and seconded by Deb. Passed unanimously.

Secretary's Report: Motion to accept the minutes of the September 11, 2006 meeting was made by Nadine and seconded by Matty. Passed unanimously.

Motion: Chuck moved that it be resolved that the PEA adopt as a policy the NJEA's 'Demand and Return' system in order to comply with the requirements of PL 2002 Chapter 46. This act requires public employees to deduct a representation fee in lieu of dues in certain circumstances and amends PL 1979c.477. Seconded by Nadine. Passed unanimously.

Committee Reports:

  1. Membership:
    1. Barb reporting. 7 out of approx. 650 PEA members are Rep Fee. All have been personally invited to become full members. Chuck distributed updated building rosters to all reps.
  2. Scholarship:
    1. Joan Ricker reported on the lack of availability of PEA t-shirts at the moment. Motion to make up to $300 available immediately for the purchase of more PEA t-shirts was made by Chuck and seconded by Linda Fowler. Passed unanimously. Chuck moved, on behalf of the members of the Scholarship Committee, that the week of Monday, October 30, through Friday, November 3, be set aside for the annual PEA/John Pokrivchak Philanthropic fund drive. Seconded by Linda Fowler. Passed unanimously. $10 donations are recommended for teachers and $5 for all other PEA members. Half the funds collected will be disbursed to the NORWESCAP Food Bank. The other half will go to the PEA Scholarship Fund.
  3. Ed Council:
    1. Next meeting is Wed., Oct. 11, at 6p.m. at Flynn's on the Hill. Barb asked AR's to verify that every building has a rep present and to inform her whom it is.
  4. Health & Safety:
    1. Marilyn Shober reported that Jen Ostile has agreed to chair this committee. Information on the presence of mold at the Early Childhood Center and high school was presented. First meeting is scheduled for October 19 at the Early Childhood Center. Barb was informed by NJEA to issue a health survey to all our members in the district.
  5. WCEA:
    1. Marilyn Shober noted that there is an 'Assertive Discipline' workshop at Harkers Hollow and the annual new members 'Clambake' at Flynn's coming up soon. Sue Brooks noted that there will no bus this year to the annual NJEA Convention in Atlantic City.
  6. Social:
    1. Deb noted that the Deli Trip is full.
  7. Legislative:
    1. Jen Ostile reported. Jen provided updates on the latest legislative happenings in Trenton, formation of this year's 'Committee of 1000', regionalization, WCEA LAT dinner, etc.
  8. Grievance:
    1. Barb noted that there is a grievance at the arbitrator's level and another at the board level and the possibility of more to come.
  9. Negotiations:
    1. Teachers are at impasse. No date for the next meeting at this time.
    2. PEA t-shirts were worn to yesterday's in-service activities in a show of support for the negotiations team.
    3. The Action Committee is scheduled to meet on November 2 in room A106 of the middle school.
    4. The Security & Paras' contracts are up this year.

Building concerns:

  1. Green St. noted concerns about 'Dress Down Days'.
  2. Paras and other ESP personnel expressed concerns about PD workshops for themselves.
  3. Early Childhood noted concerns about yesterday's PD activities, putting supplies back into their classrooms that the district had taken out, carpeting and mold issues, and informal observations/weekly lesson plans.
  4. The high school noted that over 30 teachers met with Gordon and Jackie the evening of Tuesday, October 3, in the high school's library. This meeting was brought about by the resignation of high school social studies' teacher Diane Lein. Concerns about health issues caused by mold at the high school were noted. Finally, Chuck informed, and profusely thanked, the PSD family for their contributions of over $5,000 to Pam Irwin and her family. (Pam is a physical education teacher at the high school. The Irwin household was destroyed in a gas explosion within the past two weeks.) This makes the second time within a year that the PSD family has come to the aid of one of the high school's family members. Last year many individuals donated their personal days to the Sick Bank to assist Jared Helms, PHS math teacher, as he wrestled with chemotherapy.

Old Business:

  1. Barb informed everyone that individuals who are required to stay after school hours for Middle States activities will receive comp time.

New Business:

  1. The Voice Shot system will be extended to the entire district soon.
  2. Flu shots are not being arranged by the district at this time.
  3. Barb has collected data on school closing policies due to excessive heat. She asked for a volunteer(s) to continue investigating such policies with regard to Lehigh Valley schools.
  4. Barb asked that as many members as possible attend the October 23 board meeting.
