Board clears up mix-up over job

PHILLIPSBURG | School board members and Superintendent Gordon Pethick aired an apparent miscommunication over filling a job vacancy during a meeting Monday night

Patrick Cawley retired as director of elementary education last month and some of the board members said they were under the impression the position might be eliminated by realigning responsibilities within the administration.

However Pethick said the position was temporarily filled and he was actively looking for a permanent replacement.

"I don't know if it is a board consensus to move forward to fill that position," said board member Thomas F. McGuire.

Pethick said he thought the board gave him permission to fill the position.

"The format we have right now, I feel, is a format that is appropriate to move forward," Pethick said. "If there's anything different from that, let me know."

Pethick said the full-time position was posted this week and he is moving forward to fill it.

Board member Robert C. Brennan said filling the position would not prevent a review or reassignment of administration offices and positions.

Board member Paul Rummerfield said he had no set outline or goals for the office reviews, and said the process would be up to Pethick.

Pethick said administration positions and offices were reviewed over a month ago, but that if the board wanted him to review the offices he would.

In other board news, Greenwich school board member Christopher Wittmann was sworn in to replace former board member William Kanyuck. Kanyuck was elected to the Greenwich committee in November, and resigned from the school board to take that seat.
