Candidates required to have credentials
in area they'll supervise. PHILLIPSBURG | Phillipsburg School Board members Monday night tweaked the job descriptions of the seven curriculum director jobs they created in April. The new directors must have credentials in and knowledge of the area for which they're hired, board President Paul Rummerfield said Tuesday. The board created these posts to replace the roughly 10 supervisor positions they had been using. Rummerfield said he expects some savings but that it's too early to say how much. "So what we're doing is requiring some proficiency in the discipline they're going to be supervising as a director," Rummerfield said. Curriculum directors need a New Jersey principal or school administrator certificate. They must also have experience teaching or acting as a supervisor in that subject matter, according to board documents. Other qualifications include the abilities to plan, implement and evaluate curriculum consistent with state standards; to develop strategies to address student academic performance and to analyze local and state standardized test data, the documents show. Directors are also involved in professional-development programs and staff evaluations. The district is seeking directors in kindergarten-through-fifth-grade language arts and world language; sixth-through-12th-grade language arts and world language; and kindergarten-through-12th-grade math; science; special education; social studies and fine, performing and practical arts; athletics, health and physical education. All of these positions are for 11 months of the year. The restructuring is intended to increase efficiency, accountability and to create a leaner administrative structure, district officials have said. Rummerfield said the district has already begun interviewing for these new posts and expects to have them in place for the new school year. Some candidates already work for the district, he said. The district is also considering hiring a guidance director who has a New Jersey director of school counseling or director of student personnel services certificate. In other staff business Monday, the board accepted resignations from the following employees: Curriculum Supervisor Rosanne Manmiller, Supervisor of Special Education at Special Services Gail DeWitt, Director of Plants and Facilities Thomas Scerbo, custodian Edward Maslonka, paraprofessional Rachel Smith, paraprofessional Lizette Quinones, paraprofessional Pamela Monahan, math teacher Steven Genzale, math teacher Pamela Shillingford and high school teacher Jamie Stem.
