PHILLIPSBURG | The school board will put up a figurative "help wanted" sign for the most important nonelected position in town.

Board President Paul Rummerfield said the district likely would start the hunt for a new superintendent in September, and he hopes to get things done quickly.

"If we find another superintendent in another district, it gives that person proper time to give notice," Rummerfield said.

Rummerfield said he's looking for a real educational leader, someone who would bring innovations such as online classes to Phillipsburg.

"I think we've been a little stagnant in that area," Rummerfield said. "We're looking for a well-rounded individual."

Board personnel committee chairman Kevin DeGerolamo said the search needs to begin sooner than later.

"We're trying to find someone who is willing to work with the board," DeGerolamo said.

Rummerfield said the board will reach out to the New Jersey School Boards Association for help. Association spokesman Mike Yaple said the consultation fee is $6,000, not including advertising.

"We work with the board and community to establish criteria for superintendent," Yaple said.

The association takes that criteria and conducts a search. It hosts community forums with residents, teachers and the board. The group then assists with advertising in major publications and with interviews.

Rummerfield said an administrator with Abbott district experience would be a plus. Rummerfield and DeGerolamo said they will look internally and at the sending districts as well as the association's expanded search.

Superintendent Gordon Pethick was doubtful that he'd be asked for input.

His preference is to see Assistant Superintendent Jacqueline Attinello replace him.

"She's been involved and is exceptionally capable," Pethick said.

DeGerolamo said he wouldn't rule out consulting Pethick, though he said it would be a bit awkward given the nature of Pethick's exit.

Rummerfield said he'd like to see the full board involved in the hiring process rather than just the personnel committee. Preliminary interviews may be conducted behind closed doors with final interviews being done publicly.
